Overview

We're pleased to announce a significant enhancement to Access Point of Care (APOC) with the introduction of integrated BNF access. This update enables care staff to tap medication names during administration rounds to instantly access BNF information without leaving the medication screen or searching for physical books.


New features

Direct BNF access from medication names

Care workers can now tap medication names during administration rounds to instantly access BNF information.

  • Clickable medication names with clear visual indicators.

  • In-app BNF website access without losing medication round context.

  • Instant access to contraindications, interactions, and dosing guidance.

This feature appears directly within medication administration screens where medication names are displayed, maintaining workflow continuity while providing essential safety information.


Enhanced medication hyperlink recognition

  • Improved visual styling makes medication hyperlinks more recognisable and accessible.

  • Clear hover and focus states provide better visual feedback during interaction.

  • Mobile-optimised touch targets ensure easy access on mobile devices.

  • Consistent styling across all medication list contexts throughout APOC.


Optimised BNF search integration

  • Intelligent search query construction improves result relevance for care home contexts.

  • Enhanced search result prioritization highlights key sections most relevant to medication administration.

  • Fallback search strategies handle medication variations and abbreviations effectively.

  • Performance optimisation with caching for frequently accessed medications.

Additional information

Network requirements

This feature requires an active internet connection to access BNF content. When offline, medication names will appear without hyperlink styling and users will receive appropriate offline messaging.

User experience notes

  • BNF content loads within the APOC app using a WebView component.

  • Touch targets are optimized for mobile use with minimum 44x44px sizing.

  • Loading typically completes within 3 seconds with progress indicators provided.

  • Context preservation ensures users return to their exact position in medication rounds.
